Real-Time Bill of Lading Software for Faster Cargo Operations
Client Profile
A leading global shipping and logistics provider, the client oversees high-volume cargo operations across multiple inland terminals. Each day, thousands of shipments are managed, with the bill of lading serving as a central document in these transactions. Initially, the client depended on manual document handling processes, which became increasingly inefficient as global trade activity surged. To meet the demands of faster cargo movement, local autonomy, and real-time visibility, the client recognized the need for a dedicated bill of lading software capable of automating document capture and data extraction across distributed terminal environments.

Challenges
Manual processing of bills of lading creates issues in cargo clearance, particularly during peak operating hours and periods of heightened shipment volume. Staff were burdened with sorting, verifying, and entering data from physical documents and scanned images, leading to avoidable delays and frequent errors. Additionally, traditional OCR platforms dependent on cloud connectivity were unreliable in remote port locations, where bandwidth was limited or inconsistent. The absence of real-time data extraction further hampered visibility across customs, warehousing, and transport workflows. The client required a resilient system that could extract data from shipping documents and operate reliably across decentralized, bandwidth-constrained environments.
Solutions
We deployed Percepta, as a bill of lading software tool built to digitize shipping documents in real time. Designed for edge environments, Percepta enabled document scanning and intelligent data extraction to occur on-site at cargo entry points, without relying on constant internet connectivity. The software captured key bill of lading fields, such as shipper and consignee information, container IDs, and cargo descriptions, and automatically formatted and pushed the data into the client’s logistics systems and ERP platform. Percepta seamlessly integrated with the client’s existing hardware ecosystem, including handheld scanners and terminal gate systems, ensuring minimal disruption during rollout. Its intelligent document recognition engine allowed staff to process high volumes of paperwork faster and with far greater accuracy.
Results
By implementing Percepta, the client transformed its document workflows. Bills of lading were digitized at the point of receipt and processed in real time, significantly accelerating cargo clearance and reducing shipment delays. Manual data entry was eliminated, leading to cleaner records and fewer errors. Most critically, Percepta’s edge-native architecture ensured continued operation in remote ports with poor connectivity, maintaining uninterrupted logistics flows. Cross-functional teams, including customs, warehousing, and transportation, gained immediate access to accurate shipment data, enabling more agile collaboration and improved decision-making. The client now benefits from faster operations, enhanced data integrity, and a scalable digitization strategy aligned with the demands of modern global shipping.
